Texas State vs. UTSA in San Marcos: A Game-Day Guide (Sept 12, 2026)

The I-35 Showdown comes to UFCU Stadium on Saturday, September 12: a 2:30 kickoff, a brand-new free tailgate zone, and every hotel in town filling up. Here's how to plan the day from parking to the morning before.

Edited by La Quinta San Marcos Editorial Team

One Saturday this September will fill every hotel in San Marcos, and it's the 12th. UTSA comes up the interstate from San Antonio, Texas State defends home turf, and the matchup now has an official name: the I-35 Showdown. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. at UFCU Stadium, about ten minutes north of our front door.

If you're a fan on either side, or you booked an outlet-shopping weekend that happens to collide with all this, here's what game day in San Marcos actually looks like: when things open, where the tailgating happens, how parking works, and what to do with a free morning before a mid-afternoon kickoff.

The basics

Texas State vs. UTSA. Saturday, September 12, 2026. Kickoff 2:30 p.m. Central, UFCU Stadium, San Marcos. Televised on The CW.

A quick word on the venue name, because search results still disagree with each other. UFCU Stadium is the former Bobcat Stadium: Texas State sold the naming rights to University Federal Credit Union in 2024. The playing surface inside is still Jim Wacker Field, a name it has carried since 2003. Same building, new sign.

The stadium is about ten minutes north of the hotel by car. On a normal Tuesday that drive is nothing. On a game Saturday, it's the busiest ten minutes in town. More on that below.

A rivalry, not a conference game

This season is a strange and interesting one for Texas State, and it's worth understanding before you go, because the crowd will be talking about it.

The Bobcats joined the Pac-12 on July 1, 2026, after 13 years in the Sun Belt. It's the biggest move in the program's history. But the conference era hasn't actually started yet. All three of September's home games are non-conference, and the first Pac-12 game doesn't come until October 3, on the road at San Diego State.

So the UTSA game isn't a conference matchup and doesn't pretend to be one. It's something arguably better: a neighbor fight. San Antonio is about 45 miles down I-35, which means both fan bases drive the same highway to the same stadium, and the athletics department leaned into it when they made "I-35 Showdown" the official theme for the day. Expect a louder, fuller building than a typical September non-conference date.

Tickets are sold through txst.com/tickets. We won't quote prices: they move around, and the rivalry game is the one that sells. If you're planning to be inside the stadium, buy before you drive down, not at a window on Saturday.

The tailgate: Boko's Backyard

The biggest change to game day this season isn't on the field. In August, Texas State unveiled Boko's Backyard, a dedicated tailgate destination across from UFCU Stadium on the campus recreation grass fields, and this game is one of its first big tests.

What you need to know:

  • It's free to enter. No ticket required for the tailgate itself.
  • It opens about six hours before kickoff for most games. For a 2:30 kickoff, figure roughly 8:30 in the morning, and confirm at txst.com/gameday, since timing can shift by game.
  • What's there: food trucks, beverages, live entertainment, picnic tables, kids' activities, and the football team's catwalk into the stadium. The catwalk is the one moment worth planting yourself somewhere with a sightline.
  • Bringing your own setup? Reserve. Fans who want to bring their own tailgating equipment must reserve a space, and all spaces must be booked by the Thursday of game week: for this game, that's Thursday, September 10. Day-before setup is available for reserved spaces, and if your tailgate includes alcohol service, the university requires TABC-certified attendants to run it.
  • No reservation? Still fine. Community tailgating areas are available without one. You just won't have a claimed spot with your own equipment.

Two honest notes. First, this is the zone's first September, so treat any secondhand advice about how it flows as provisional and check the official page for current rules. We're not going to guess at what's allowed on a grill, because the university's own posted rules are the only answer that matters. Second, if reserving matters to you, the Thursday deadline is real and this post publishes five days before the game. Don't sit on it.

Parking, traffic, and getting through the gates

Parking at UFCU Stadium is a mix: both free and paid public lots exist on game days, managed by Texas State Athletics, and single-game parking is sold in advance through the athletics ticket office (512-245-2272). Which lots are which changes often enough that we won't name any specific lot as free. The current map lives at txst.com/gameday, and that's the page to open before you leave the hotel.

On timing: this stretch of I-35 is slow on an ordinary Saturday and slower on a game one, and the corridor has been under a long-running TxDOT rebuild for years. Leaving the hotel 90 minutes to two hours before kickoff is not overkill if you want to park, walk, and see the start of the game without jogging.

At the gates, plan for a clear-bag policy: in recent seasons the stadium has allowed a clear bag or a small clutch, with gates opening about 90 minutes before kickoff. Those specifics come from the university's 2025 guidance, so treat them as expected rather than gospel and check the game-day page for the current version. The safe play either way: carry less. Phone, card, sunscreen.

And it will be warm. A 2:30 September kickoff in central Texas means full sun through most of the game. Water, a hat, and sunscreen aren't optional equipment.

The morning before: snakes, actually

A 2:30 kickoff leaves a whole morning open, and San Marcos happens to have a genuinely odd and genuinely free answer for it.

Snakefessst (yes, three s's) runs the same Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive. It's the city's celebration of local reptiles: guided herp walks, talks, live displays, crafts for kids. Free to attend, and it wraps at 2:00, exactly thirty minutes before kickoff, which we choose to believe someone scheduled on purpose. It's a short drive from the stadium area, so a morning at Snakefessst and an afternoon at the game is a real, doable double feature. Just don't try to do the 1 p.m. portion and beat traffic to your seat.

If reptiles aren't your idea of a pre-game, the outlets open mid-morning and are a six-minute walk from our lobby. Our shopper's guide to walking the outlet district covers how the two malls fit together. Or there's Boko's Backyard from roughly 8:30 onward, if your ideal morning smells like a tailgate.

Where to stay, and why to book this week

We'll say the quiet part plainly: home football Saturdays fill every hotel in San Marcos, and a rivalry game against the school 45 miles down the road fills them faster. If you're reading this the week it publishes, book now, wherever you book.

Here's our case, honestly made. The La Quinta Inn & Suites San Marcos Outlet Mall sits at I-35 exit 200 in the outlet district, about ten minutes from UFCU Stadium by car. Free on-site parking means you're not paying to store the car overnight before paying again near campus. There's a free hot breakfast to get you fed before an early tailgate, and the pool and fitness center for the Sunday after. We're pet friendly, which matters more on football weekends than people expect. And the thing that makes us different from every other hotel in town: San Marcos Premium Outlets is a six-minute walk from the front door, Tanger about seven. That gives the half of your group that couldn't care less about football a full day on foot while you're at the stadium.

We're not the closest hotel to campus, and we won't pretend otherwise: there are hotels along I-35 nearer the university, and on a pure minutes-to-gate basis some beat us. What we'd argue is that ten minutes is a rounding error on game day, and the walkable outlets, free parking, and breakfast are not.

The rest of the weekend

If you're staying Friday to Sunday, the game is the centerpiece, not the whole trip.

The San Marcos River runs about 72°F year-round: spring-fed, clear, and still very much in season in mid-September. Tubing outfitters run weekends this time of year (Texas State Tubes operates Friday through Sunday in September, weather permitting), which makes a slow Sunday float the correct recovery from a Saturday in the sun. The river is about ten minutes from the hotel. Our things to do page has the full picture of what's nearby.

Saturday night after the game, you'll want food that doesn't involve a stadium line. Our dining page covers the spots we actually send guests to, from barbecue up the access road to the sit-down options near the outlets.

And Sunday morning, before checkout: breakfast downstairs, one last unhurried lap of the outlets on foot, and an easy merge onto I-35 in either direction. Austin's about 30 miles north, San Antonio about 45 south.

Coming down for the Showdown? Check availability for the weekend of September 12, and do it before UTSA's fans do.
