This Month in San Marcos: September 2026

Three home football Saturdays, Family Weekend, a two-day craft market at Tanger, and the last tubing weekends of the year. Here's what September 2026 actually looks like in San Marcos, with dates.

Edited by La Quinta San Marcos Editorial Team

September in San Marcos runs on the football calendar. Texas State plays three straight home Saturdays this month, the 12th, the 19th, and the 26th, and the last of those lands on top of Family Weekend and the river's final tubing weekend of the year. Those three dates will decide more of your trip than you might expect: room availability, traffic at the exits, even what you'll pay to park near the water.

So here's the whole month, sorted the way we'd lay it out at the front desk. Dates first, logistics second, and an honest note at the end about which weekends to book early and which to pick if crowds aren't your thing.

Three home Saturdays at UFCU Stadium

First, the context, because the crowds will be talking about it: the Bobcats are a Pac-12 program now. Texas State joined the conference on July 1, 2026, after 13 years in the Sun Belt, and this is the first September of the new era. None of the three home games are conference games, the Pac-12 opener doesn't come until October 3 at San Diego State, but the middle date on this slate doesn't need standings to matter.

Saturday, September 12: UTSA, 2:30 p.m., on The CW. The I-35 Showdown, as the athletics department has officially themed it, and the biggest single hotel-filling day of the month. Both fan bases drive the same interstate to the same stadium, San Antonio being about 45 miles down the road. We published a full game-day guide covering the tailgate, parking, and bag rules, so the short version here: arrive early, and if you want a room in town that night, book it now.

Saturday, September 19: North Texas, 11:00 a.m., on USA. The oddball of the three, a morning kickoff. It compresses the tailgate into breakfast hours and hands you back the entire afternoon and evening, which in San Marcos is not a bad trade. The athletics department bills it as a First Responder Bowl rematch, doubling as faculty and staff appreciation day.

Saturday, September 26: Incarnate Word, 5:00 p.m., on USA. Officially designated the Family Weekend game. On paper it's the least dramatic matchup of the three, and it may still be the hardest night of the month to find a room. More on that below.

All three games are at UFCU Stadium, the former Bobcat Stadium, about ten minutes north of us by car. For current parking maps, gate times, and bag policy, the live source is txst.com/gameday. Tickets sell through txst.com, and the rivalry game is the one that goes fast.

Family Weekend: September 25–27

Texas State's Family Weekend runs Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, and it does what it sounds like: Bobcat families converge on a town whose hotels are also absorbing a home football game that same Saturday. The university runs registration through its online store, and its own description is that many events are free to attend while others are ticketed. The event-by-event schedule posts closer to the date at family.txst.edu.

If you're a Bobcat parent reading this in early September, the practical takeaway is simple. This weekend's demand is the predictable collision of a parents' weekend, a home game, and the tubing outfitters' final Saturday, all on September 26. Book the room before you settle any other part of the plan.

Snakefessst: the morning of September 12

Yes, three s's. The city's celebration of local reptiles runs Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Marcos Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive, and it's free: guided herp walks, talks, live displays, and crafts for the kids. It also wraps exactly thirty minutes before the UTSA kickoff, so a reptile morning and a football afternoon is a genuinely workable double feature, provided you don't linger for the last talk and then expect to beat traffic to your seat.

A two-day craft market at Tanger: September 19–20

The outlet district gets its own event this month. The San Marcos Autumn Craft & Vendor Market, run by Hometown Vendor Market, takes over Tanger Outlets on Saturday, September 19 from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday, September 20 from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Tanger is about a seven-minute walk from our front door, which makes this the one event on September's calendar you can attend without touching your car.

Two notes. The Saturday overlaps the 11 a.m. North Texas game, and since the market runs into the evening, a morning at the stadium and an afternoon among the vendor booths is an easy pairing. And the organiser hasn't published admission details anywhere we can find, so don't assume it's free. Check the event page before you go.

Last call on the river

The river itself doesn't change in September. It stays right around 72°F, same as July, because the springs that feed it hold that temperature all year. What changes is the machinery around it. Texas State Tubes runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only this month, weather permitting, and its stated season ends on the last Saturday of September. Call 512-638-7165 before you build a day around a float, because a cool snap can shorten the calendar. The Lions Club tube rental at City Park, the nonprofit whose proceeds fund local causes, runs into the fall on its own reduced schedule, with the last shuttle of the day at 6:30 p.m. Call 512-396-5466 before you drive over rather than trusting a website. After this month, tubing is done until spring. If a float is on your list, the window is these next few weekends, and it is closing.

Two parking facts save the most grief down there. Rio Vista Park, the swimming and rapids spot, is free to enter, whatever you may have read elsewhere, but its free parking fills fast on nice weekends. There's also free street parking along CM Allen Parkway and at Veramendi Plaza and Ramon Lucio Park, and it goes just as fast. The paid lot at City Park charges out-of-area visitors on a sliding scale, first 30 minutes free, topping out at $15 for a full day, and switches to a flat $25 on Texas State event days. Every remaining Saturday this month is a home-game Saturday, so plan on the higher rate applying then, or come down early on a Sunday instead.

If you'd rather be on the water than in it, the Meadows Center runs glass-bottom boat tours over the springs at Spring Lake, about ten minutes from the hotel. Standard 30-minute tours go out daily and longer 45-minute tours run on weekends only, each boat holds 20 adults, and same-day tickets sell first come, first served at the ticket kiosk. Timing matters more than people expect: the center closes at 5 p.m. and the last boat departs at 4:30, and a daily parking permit is required, bought at the kiosk or through the AMP Park app. Our things to do page has the full river rundown.

The weather, plainly

Don't pack for fall. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for this stretch of the corridor put September highs around 90°F, with nights in the upper 60s. The genuine break comes in October, not now.

What that means for a September trip: sun protection for an 11 a.m. kickoff is not optional, the river is a legitimate midday activity all month rather than a summer leftover, and the open-air outlet malls are best worked as a morning session and an evening session with a break in between. You will not need a jacket, even for the 5 p.m. game on the 26th. Evenings settle into the 70s and stay pleasant on a patio well after dark.

New this fall, and one closure

Boko's Backyard is new for 2026: the official game-day tailgate zone across from UFCU Stadium on the campus rec fields. It's free to walk into and opens about six hours before kickoff for most games, with food trucks, live entertainment, and the team's walk into the stadium. Anyone bringing their own tailgate setup must reserve a space by the Thursday of game week, so that's September 10, 17, and 24 for this month's three games.

The Wetlands Boardwalk at the Meadows Center is closed for repairs until further notice. The glass-bottom boats are running as usual, but don't plan a visit around the boardwalk.

City Park's paid parking has been in force since July 2025 and still catches out returning visitors who remember that lot being free. The rates above are the current structure, and locals with an approved permit park free.

The booking math for September

Three home games, a parents' weekend, and a closing tubing season stack this month's demand onto its Saturdays, and onto two of them in particular. September 12 is the rivalry. September 26 is the collision, when Family Weekend, the designated Family Weekend game, and the last tubing Saturday of the year all land at once. If your dates touch either one, book now and ask questions later.

If your dates are flexible and you're here for the outlets or the river rather than football, the same math works in your favor. Midweek in September is about as quiet as San Marcos gets: warm river, uncrowded stores, easy tables at dinner. Sunday through Thursday is the connoisseur's window this month.

Either way, our corner of town is a practical base for all of it. We sit at I-35 exit 200 in the outlet district, a six-minute walk to San Marcos Premium Outlets and seven to Tanger, about ten minutes by car to the river, the stadium, or the Meadows Center, with free parking and a free hot breakfast that earns its keep before an 11 a.m. kickoff. Where to eat while you're here is its own post, our guide to the restaurants near the outlets, and if you're curious how the season unfolds from here, our fall guide covers what closes and what opens as October arrives.
